The latest team to join the bandwagon in Bacary Sagna’s pursuit, as per reports, is former Premier League champions Leicester City. The French full back is a free agent at the moment after Manchester City decided to release him in their mass exodus last season end. And now with the transfer window closed, numerous clubs are looking for the last few pieces before starting the season in a full-fledged manner.
Under Craig Shakespeare, the Foxes have started their season terribly, losing three of their opening four games. However, given that those three games were against Arsenal, Manchester and Chelsea, the manager hasn’t been under huge pressure as such. Leicester won two games, one in the Premier League against Brighton & Hove Albion and one against Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup.
It is now that they have a run of winnable games in the league against Huddersfield Town, Swansea City, AFC Bournemouth, and West Bromwich Albion with Liverpool being an exception. One of the biggest concerns for the manager would be his back line. Leicester have conceded eight goals in four games and Shakespeare cannot afford to lose all his games against the top six sides.
While the Foxes have decent options for most of their positions, right-back remains the only exception. Apart from Danny Simpson, Shakespeare has no natural player to take his position. In the EFL Cup second round game, he had to play defensive midfielder Daniel Amartey in that position, and while it went well against a Championship side it can easily backfire in their next round against Liverpool.
Leicester have registered fewer than 25 players in their Premier League squads at the start of the month and are eligible to include one more, which justifies their interest in Sagna. The 34-year-old can bring a huge amount of experience to whatever side he goes given his lengthy tenure in the Premier League.
Many top-flight clubs like Brighton, Chelsea, West Ham, West Bromwich Albion and Everton were keen on him during the summer, but a deal failed to go through.
Sagna has played 83 games for the Sky Blues since joining them in 2014. He made 14 league starts and came off the bench thrice last season. However, he is known for his brilliant stint Arsenal, where he played 285 times since arriving in 2007 from France.
However, Leicester will need to move fast as Crystal Palace are eyeing a move for him after they left young goalie Kleton Perntreou to add one more player to the 25-man squad. Do you think Sagna is a decent option for the Foxes?
