Liverpool are looking to get their priorities right this season, having lost their last match by an overwhelming score line of 5-0 against arch rivals Manchester City in the Premier League. The loss has revealed the scars of their defence that they were trying to hide under the might of their formidable attacking lineup, but could not, given the mayhem they had to face at Etihad Stadium during the last weekend.
It has now become a priority for the Reds to get a top class defender in their side for the rest of the season, who will help to keep their opponents at bay and make their back line look as good as their attack.
Their manager Jurgen Klopp is well aware of the fact and has been looking for one such player in the recently concluded summer transfer window, but failed to procure the player whom he has been targeting for quite some time, Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk.
The Dutch international has been one of the most sought after player in the summer in the English Premier League given his brilliant leadership qualities, which has brought him to the limelight and has made him one of the most wanted defenders in the Premier League, pursued by a number of big name clubs including the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.
The player has been targeted by the Reds for quite some time, who have been lacking quality players in their backline to guard their defence efficiently. Given the fact that they are taking part in the UEFA Champions League as well will be an added pressure on the club that finished last season in the fourth position to find a place in the premier club competition in Europe for the next season.
During the transfer window, the Saints accused the Reds of tapping their player, contacting him without their consent so as to land him at Anfield. They made an official complaint about the whole incident in front of the English Football Association and the FA made their verdict in favour of the South Coast club, restricting the Reds from getting the deal done.
However, with the player showing interest to leave Southampton in the recent times, it might be possible for the Reds to get their desired candidates in their bag in the forthcoming transfer window. It will be a major boost for Liverpool to get a better back line at their disposal in case they are able to land the player.
They have impending problems at the back and need a CB very quickly. Best be it Van Dijk. But do you think Liverpool can land him in January at least?
