Chelsea have started their season on a strong note, having beaten two of their arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Everton in consecutive matches. However, they were beaten in the first match of the season against Burnley, which brought to daylight the shortcomings that they need to focus on for the rest of the term.
The Blues are looking for a player who can give them enough stability in the midfield, it is one of the areas of concern in the recent times. A number of players were linked with the West London club throughout the recently concluded transfer window, the name of the Everton midfielder Ross Barkley being right on the top of their list.
The player has been a contract rebel from the last term, it was looking imminent for him to leave Goodison Park this summer. Chelsea took advantage of the turmoil between Barkley and the Merseyside club and offered a lucrative deal to the Englishman, luring him into Stamford Bridge. The deal was on and the player appeared in London for his medical ahead of the deadline day swoop.
However, the player, to everyone’s surprise, rejected the deal and made an exit from the medical at the West London club. Speculations are rife that the player was much more willing to join Tottenham Hotspur and thus scuppered the deal with Chelsea on deadline day.
The situation being this, the player will be staying back with the Merseyside club for the time being, with a year left on his contract. He denied to pen down a new one, which started a rift between Barkley and the current club manager Ronald Koeman, who has already brought players like Davy Klaassen from Ajax and Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City into the side to fill in for the contract rebel Englishman.
With the Spurs needing a top class midfielder in their side, who will be able to play alongside Dele Alli and Eric Dier, delivering brilliant passes and also contribute in the attack by scoring important goals, Barkley might have been the perfect choice for them for the rest of the season. However, the North London club will have to wait for their turn to sign the player until January when the transfer window reopens.
For the time being, the player has been nursing an injury. Now that the transfer window has closed, it might be beneficial for the English midfielder to get fully fit and return to the pitch, up and running for whichever club he chooses to dedicate his future to.
