With the transfer window closed yesterday, players from all corners of the globe have arrived at the Premier League. The previous record of £1.165bn has been easily broken as clubs have invested a total of almost £1.4bn this summer.
With a rapid rise in the Premier League TV rights and prize-money, clubs have been splashing money pretty lavishly with no dearth of funds at their disposal. The 4th Official takes a look back on the most promising signings of the summer window.
Nemanja Matic
A section of Chelsea supporters got very surprised when Chelsea decided to part ways with Nemanja Matic. Antonio Conte felt he did not need the midfielder anymore and sold the Serbian midfield destroyer to Manchester United for a reported fee of £40 million.
It was a matter of concern for the Red Devils, as fans were having a doubt over his ability. But once the season got rolling, Matic proved he only meant business. Jose Mourinho won two titles at the Stamford Bridge and Matic played a vital role in both of them.
The need of a proper defensive midfielder at Old Trafford was felt last season as both Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera had to share the defensive duties. It curtailed their natural attacking instincts to a great extent, however, the arrival of the lanky Serbian will definitely give them more freedom.
Mohamed Salah
Liverpool’s decision to buy the AS Roma attacker raised few eyebrows. This is Salah’s second stint in the Premier League as the Egyptian international previously had a very bitter experience during his time with Chelsea.
However, on his return to the Premier League, Salah looks a different player altogether. The unavailability of Philippe Coutinho hasn’t been felt as he has acclimatised himself beautifully in Jurgen Klopp’s setup and Liverpool’s attack is looking far more threatening.
Salah’ feet have already started the talking as the ex-Chelsea winger has racked in two goals and one assist to start his new Premier League journey.
Mamadou Sakho
Nobody could forget Sakho’s bravery in the Crystal Palace back line. Due to his leadership, the Eagles somehow rescued themselves. Sakho was on loan at Selhurst Park as a late change of mind by Jurgen Klopp allowed the French international to join the London based club.
Frank de Boer has been looking for a stout defender who could safeguard his defence with sheer confidence. Sakho’s game reading ability and intelligent defending will hand a lifeline to Boer who is on the verge of losing his chair.
