Mauricio Pochettino will not be too happy a manager as his side failed to take anything from their first home game of the new season against defending champions Chelsea last weekend. Spurs have made just one addition to their squad this summer and with time running out, the manager is now desperately scouting for players who can improve the quality in the squad for the new campaign.
This has seen them linked with some of the brightest stars in Europe and one player constantly linked with a move to the club is Diego Laxalt.
Reports on Thursday claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are now interested in the 24-year old and are ready to battle it out with Newcastle United to bring him to England this summer. Also linked with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United in the past, Laxalt is expected to cost €15m this summer and will be a steal for any club in England.
Born and brought up in Montevideo, Uruguay, Laxalt started his youth career with Defensor Sporting where he moved to the senior side in 2012 as a teenager. He spent just a year at the club before moving on to Italian giants Inter Milan, where he failed to get a single game in the senior side, spending loan stints at three different clubs in two years.
He joined Genoa on a permanent basis at the start of the last season and established himself as the first choice winger at the club, making 36 appearances and picking up four assists and a goal in the Italian top flight. He has also represented his national side, making three senior appearances to add to his 99 Serie A appearances to date.
A wing-back by trait, Laxalt is a dynamic player who can also play as an attacking winger but is adept at sitting deep and helping his backline. With gifted technique and great dribbling abilities, he is a perfect player to have on the wings and will be a decent addition for Spurs.
He is strong in hold up play and can put in inch-perfect crosses and can be a decent replacement for Danny Rose, who wants to quit the club. Ben Davies will remain the first choice for the club this season but if Laxalt moves to London, he may not take too long to establish himself in the first team.
At just 24, he ticks most boxes in Pochettino’s recruitment form, and at his price, is an absolute steal. But do you think Laxalt is the right man for Spurs?
