Tottenham Hotspur lost their second match in a hard-fought contest against defending champions Chelsea in their own backyard to an 88th-minute winner from the Blues’ winger Marcos Alonso, who also scored the opening goal to put his team in front. The Spurs made a comeback by virtue of a late own goal from Michy Batshuayi, but could not make the equaliser count, as the first London Derby of the season went in the favour of the West Londoners.
This has irked the Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to find a permanent solution for his defensive woes, with his first-choice full-back Danny Rose not being able to play for quite some time given his injury scare. The Argentine mastermind is eyeing a number of options to fill up the position and has made Celtic’s Kieran Tierney his main target, with a few more days left to the closure of the transfer window.
The 20-year-old has been brilliant in the last term for his club and made a big contribution in helping his team win the Scottish Premiership.
The Scottish international has been one of the most highly rated players in his country as well as in the Premier League and might be brought into the top flight to fill in the void left by the absence of the English international Danny Rose in the Tottenham defence during the ongoing summer transfer window.
Tierney has risen through the ranks at Celtic and has been playing for the senior team since his inclusion in the side in 2015. The player has made 84 appearances so far and has been one of the few top-class left backs playing in the current scenario, with a very bright future ahead of him.
His pace and prowess down the left-hand side have found him a number of potential suitors who are looking to bring him in for the new season. However, Tottenham look to be the strongest candidates in the present situation, an association with whom might change the future of the youngster for good.
Pochettino is known for his appreciation of young talents and has turned a number of talented youngsters into superstar footballers in the present day, one of them being the English sensation Dele Alli. It will be a great opportunity for the 20-year-old Scottish left back Tierney to work under the benevolent tutelage of the Argentine mastermind as well.
However, it will not be easy for Spurs to get a hand on the player in the summer, as his current possessors Celtic will look to keep hold of him for the new season as well.
