Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly received a huge transfer boost in their pursuit of Serie A midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia with things between the player and his club Inter Milan looking to be on shaky grounds at the moment. Reportedly, the player has been forced to train alone at Inter Milan after a massive argument with the club.
The French international hadn’t turned up for training last week following the fallout and has apparently been fined somewhere in the region of £200,000, and is training on his own. Spurs are in dire need of more depth in their central midfield at the moment and Mauricio Pochettino would jump at this opportunity if the news is true.
The Lilywhites had an easy start to their Premier League campaign as Pochettino saw his side overcoming newly promoted Newcastle United 2-0 at their backyard. Although Rafael Benitez’s men managed to break the opponent’s sweat in the first half to some extent, injuries to Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune and a red card to Jonjo Shelvey made it impossible for them to hold on to it.
Though Tottenham have two brilliant options in Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, the manager is concerned with the lack of squad depth that would come to haunt him if his side progresses in their European campaign. An addition like Kondogbia, who is young and strong from the deep midfield, would be ideal for any Premier League side.
Given his recent spat with the club, Inter Milan are more than expected to part ways with him and Tottenham’s challenger to the league title, Liverpool FC, are also keen on landing him. At 188cm, Kondogbia could be said to be a technically superior version of Wanyama and would be a massive upgrade for Spurs.
Following a brilliant display for Ligue 1 defending champions AS Monaco, the 24-year-old was bought by Inter back in 2015 for a sumptuous £27million and was touted by many as the next big thing. However, the Italian giants’ both on and off field problems had snowballed massively and it affected his mentality at the club. And despite his good debut season, the player’s rift with former boss Frank de Boer saw his first team chances dwindling.
Kondogbia could be domineering from aerial threats in England and might be the missing piece in Tottenham’s star-studded squad. Spurs have to move fast though as they run the risk of Inter swapping him with Valencia’s Joao Cancelo, whom Inter have been following keenly.
