Premier League runners-up club Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly doubled their intensity in the chase of Bundesliga’s teen sensation Max Meyer and have also made an offer for the German star. Max Meyer is being targeted by Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool and reports indicate that he could be one of the late arrivals in England in the last minutes of the transfer window.
The FC Schalke star has refused to extend his contract with the club and has given sufficient hint in his interview with German news outlet BILD that he isn’t happy at Schalke. He said, “Let’s see what happens. I declined the [contract] offer because I was not satisfied with my personal situation. I just saw no chance to develop. It would have been the wrong step, however, because the overall situation has changed.”
Both Arsenal and Spurs are searching for a quality addition to their midfield but both have enough firepower in their squad already to compete in the league without Meyer’s inclusion, which makes him a backup option at best. While the Euro Under 21-star, who was even selected in the team of the tournament, wouldn’t want to play a second or third fiddle, he knows his underwhelming displays in the domestic campaign will not help much.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino made a similar mistake last season when he went for Euro 2016-star Moussa Sissoko overlooking his pathetic displays for Newcastle United prior to it. The winger could hardly make any impact with Heung Min-Son coming to the manager’s rescue.
Meyer has shown his qualities in Bundesliga previously but possesses a quality of maddening inconsistency, which prevents Schalke from demanding a high price for the talented youngster.
According to reports, he is priced at a meagre £20 million by the club that is easily affordable by both the PL outfits. Tottenham have pretty much established the fact that they aren’t in the shadows of Arsenal anymore and not just by last season’s results but the kind of players they possess.
Meyer will be equally excited to play with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Mousa Dembele and Harry Kane, as he will be, to play with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla. And as far as the managers are concerned, both Pochettino and Arsene Wenger have been great nurturers of talents under whom Meyer can flourish.
However, we think Spurs are expected to edge past Arsenal because of their singular focus. Arsenal has already brought in two star-players and have their sights on multiple options in the midfield other than Meyer. So can he be a match winner for Spurs next season?
