According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Serie A midfielder Alfred Duncan now as manager Mauricio Pochettino seeks desperate measures before the transfer window ends on Thursday next week. The Lilywhites have been the least active among the Premier League title contenders this summer that has kept fans and players crossed.
And the poor proceedings in the campaign that Spurs have experienced so far would only infuriate them all the more. The apprehension of Wembley serving as a nightmarish home ground to the North London outfit came true on Sunday last week as a weak Chelsea side won against Spurs 2-1 despite the host dominating for most of the game.
Although the arrival of the mercurial Davinson Sanchez from AFC Ajax did lessen the annoyance to some extent for the fans, the club knows they have a lot to do before the window closes and one of their priority areas have been the midfield. Pochettino has one of the best midfields in Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier but if last season’s injury crisis meant anything then the Argentine gaffer wouldn’t really run the risk of having such a situation again.
Wanyama has been one of the powerhouses from the midfield in the Premier League and Duncan wouldn’t be any different with his superior work rate. According to Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb, the Lilywhites would be competing with Serie A giants Inter Milan for the Ghanaian international, but the current state of affairs in the club would surely edge Spurs as the winner.
The 24-year-old midfielder is valued at an affordable £14 million and it will be seen as a bargain buy for most Premier League clubs. Duncan had started his career in the youth ranks of Nerazzurri but found it difficult to break into the senior side. He was loaned off to the likes of Livorno and Sampdoria before Sampdoria finally bought him permanently.
However, he was soon sent to Sassuolo temporarily and one impressive season with them led them to make it permanent. His rise to prominence at such a young age has led to numerous clubs lining up for him with Spurs and Inter the favourites. Duncan is fast on and off the ball and can provide some of the most impeccable crosses from the flanks and inside midfield.
Pochettino’s fluid setup could suit him marvellously and his young age would mean he is ready to adapt to the changing positions.
