Tottenham Hotspur failed to take anything from their first home game at Wembley and the issues of the past were evident once again against the Champions of England. Mauricio Pochettino will now be busy trying to add some quality to try and help them compete on all four fronts this season and has been linked with some of the finest players in Europe for a move before deadline day.
One of the most experienced defenders in La Liga at the moment, Ezequiel Garay has suddenly turned into a wanted man in Europe at the moment as Spanish news-site SuperDeporte now claim that a host of Europe’s top clubs are after his signature. The likes of Manchester United, Juventus and Benfica are all interested in his signature alongside Spurs, who are ready to make a move for him.
According to the report, all four clubs had scouts present in a recent game in Spain, where he managed to help his side keep a clean sheet. So is he an option for Spurs.
The London outfit have managed to add just one player so far to their first team this summer in Davinson Sanchez, who is also a centre back but are now looking at Garay to make sure that they are the strongest team at the back in England.
A product of the Newell’s Old Boys’ Academy, the Argentine international has spent stints with Real Madrid, SL Benfica and Zenit before joining the squad at Mestalla at the start of the previous season. Naturally, he was the first choice defender for the Spanish side, helping them to a decent finish in the league table.
Known for his strength and ability to hold the ball up at the back, the 30-year old is an established defender who can play as a part of the back-4 or as a part of the back three, a system Pochettino has used regularly at Spurs.
He is strong with his passing and can create chances from a deeper role and can push into the first team straight away under the Argentine this season. This will also give their newbie Davinson Sanchez a chance to settle into the club, freeing up Eric Dier for a role in the midfield.
At 30, Garay is not usually the kind of a player that Pochettino goes after but the fact that the manager finally wants to spend on an established star shows that he has particular plans for him at the club. He is not a long term option but is the Argentine international an option Spurs should look at?
