Tottenham Hotspur’s ambitions this season is being looked upon with some suspicion and quite rightly so. The Lilywhites have been very rusty this summer in terms of their recruitments to bolster their arsenal and the departure of Kyle Walker to fellow Premier League outfit in the shape of Manchester City for a staggering transfer fee of £45million has certainly weakened them defensively.
After their 2-0 win over Newcastle United, Spurs succumbed to Chelsea last weekend as they lost 1-2 against the defending Premier League champions at Wembley. One of the notable points that was derived from their loss was Kieran Trippier’s lacklustre performance. The 26-year-old failed to impose a dynamic effect from the right and couldn’t really test the defensive setup of Antonio Conte’s men with his lacklustre attacking endeavours.
Walker’s shoes are appearing to be pretty hard to fill and Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t have much time left in the ongoing transfer window to bring a sensational name to his side. Pochettino needs to be shrewd and quick at the same time to bring a quality right-back and here are three players he could vouch in order to do the same.
- Serge Aurier
Paris Saint-Germain’s right-back Serge Aurier has been one of the players to be linked heavily with a move to the white half of North London this summer. The Ivory Coast international is likely to leave the French giants and the talented defender could be an astute replacement for Walker, considering that he has the requisite pace in his legs to maraud up and down the pitch, is physically very strong and resolute, has accumulated plenty of experience under his belt and is very sound defensively as well.
- Ricardo Pereira
FC Porto’s versatile youngster who can ply his trade as a right-back, left-back as well as a winger, Pereira was also linked with Spurs last month. The 23-year-old has spent his last two seasons with Nice and his resounding displays have been pencilled in the good books of the football fraternity. He is an excellent attacker and is a modern-day fullback who knows how to construct a neat balance between his attacking and defensive duties.
- Cedric Soares
Soares is a decent defender who has acclimatized himself with the animosity which the English top flight has had on offer ever since his move from Sporting CP in the summer of 2015. Besides, he won the Euro 2016 with Portugal and has been fairly consistent in the last two seasons for the Saints. Pochettino had put this Southampton right-back on his radar not very long ago, and he could be a decent signing for Spurs.
