Barcelona’s quiet transfer window has been surprising for many in Europe following the nightmarish season they had the last term. The La Liga giants have hardly made noise in the market with major signings with many believing that the side already has what it takes to challenge everything. With a managerial change as their biggest highlight, here are 3 players who are expected to exceed expectations next season-
Gerard Deulofeu- The La Masia academy product has returned to his boyhood club after an uncertain last season with Everton and AC Milan. Following his break into Everton’s first team the previous season, the Spaniard shockingly failed to recreate that magic in their attacking third under Ronald Koeman.
His loan move to AC Milan mid-season worked to some extent though as he scored four goals and three assists in 17 appearances and he looked to get his confidence back. The 23-year-old led the Spain’s Under-21 side to the Euro Championships and took them to the final. In the four games he played, he managed to score once and assists twice.
La Liga isn’t known for its physicality like English Premier League and the 173cm winger is expected to flourish at the second go. He has definitely improved since he last played for them two years back with a tremendous ability to provide key passes. Lionel Messi is widely regarded to take up the central role in the next one year and Deulofeu seems to be the successor of that right flank now. He could be a real stunner coming season.
Nelson Semedo- The position of a right-back was a source of huge discomfort last season. Lionel Messi hasn’t ever been the best of defenders and Sergi Roberto covering his tracks was one of the most disastrous decisions for former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique. The La Masia academy product was a subject of vile criticism for his inconsistent displays last season that might have cost Barca the La Liga, looking at hindsight.
The Portuguese full back comes on the back of huge hype from Liga NOS side Benfica where he had simply ruled the last season. He is a power-engine on the right flank having tremendous strength and unparalleled stamina. He could be an ideal replacement for Dani Alves and is expected to be the new fan favourite at the back.
Andre Gomes- The Portuguese had arrived at Nou Camp on the back of huge anticipation from La Liga rivals Valencia last year, but amidst all the chaos could hardly find his footing. He managed to get just three goals and two assists in 30 appearances last season despite performing much better than the likes of Rafinha, Sergi Roberto and Dennis Suarez.
We expect the Benfica youth product to break the shackles this season as has always been his potential. With one big name to arrive in Barcelona’s midfield alongside Andres Iniesta and him, the 24-year-old is expected to reach his peak.
