Arsene Wenger faces a now or never season ahead of him for the first time in 20 years. The 67-year-old went on to sign a two-year extension despite wide protests and yet another failure would pretty much end his run with the club. Following a terrible season last campaign, Wenger hopes some have learnt from their mistakes while some take the next huge step following their sparks of brilliance.
Here are 3 players who might spring a surprise or two next season-
Alex Iwobi- Arsenal’s Nigerian wonder kid has gone from strength to strength in the past three seasons. Since debuting for the senior squad back in 2015, the player has improved marvellously. Last season saw him getting the nod ahead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and sometimes even Theo Walcott. He is expected to sharpen following his rusty finishes last season and he has shown it on the pre-season tour.
The 21-year-old was instrumental in Arsenal’s late surge against Bayern Munich in the International Champions Cup as it was him winning the ball that started the move, ended with him heading into the bottom corner of the net. Arsenal went on to win the unimportant game on penalties but his movements had really kept people at the edge of their seats. He could manage three goals and four assists last season and we expect him to better his assists with Alexandre Lacazette up front.
Rob Holding- Yet another exciting prospect like Iwobi, the man from Bolton has wasted no time in making an impression for the Gunners following his move last summer. While the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi had pushed him down the pecking order, it was he who ended the season on a high helping Arsenal win the FA Cup against Chelsea.
Following the suspension of Laurent Koscielny and injuries to Mustafi and Gabriel Paulista, Arsene Wenger had to hand him and Per Mertesacker the onus of protecting the post. And their centre defence was hardly penetrable with the likes of Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Willian and Pedro all trying their hearts out. Arsenal are yet again expected to start the season without Mustafi and Koscielny remains suspended for the first two league games. Holding is expected to start again and this time stronger and sharper.
Sead Kolasinac- Many critics have already touted the Bosnian as the buy of the season, given the amazing power and vibrancy he brings to that left flank and the fact that Wenger got him for free. Arsenal had their best game against Liga NOS defending champions Benfica in the Emirates Cup and Kolasinac was absolutely mesmerizing there.
The strong-built figure easily outmuscled his way up the flank and showed his incredible decision-making skills from the crosses. With Alexis Sanchez ready to cut in at every opportunity, his availability on the left flank will give Arsenal huge advantage.
