Thomas Lemar’s future has been widely speculated over this past summer. The main clubs linked with the Monaco winger have been Arsenal and Liverpool. But it looks like the winger himself has decided he wants a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Liverpool have already splashed the cash this summer. They have signed Mohammed Salah for a club record fee of £37.8 million. They’ve also managed to earn the signature of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who was announced earlier today. The fee for Alex Oxlade Chamberlain is believed to be around £35 million. Liverpool had also signed Chelsea’s Dominic Solanke and Andrew Robertson from Hull City.
However, a deal for Lemar would surpass the price of all of these new signings. According to reports, Liverpool are in contact with Lemar and have made an offer of £70 million. This would be a club record fee if the deal does go through. According to the same report, Lemar has told Monaco, that he wants to join Liverpool.
Monaco have been somewhat reluctant to sell the 21-year-old. Especially after they have already lost so many top players this summer including players such as Bernardo Silva who has joined Manchester City, Tiemoue Bakayoko who joined Chelsea and if reports are to be believed wonder kid Kylian Mbappe who is set to join PSG.
Despite all of this, Liverpool should get the transfer for Thomas Lemar over the line today. One of the biggest reasons for this is the Philippe Coutinho situation. Coutinho has been rumoured to be leaving Liverpool all summer. He has not been playing this season and was left out of Liverpool’s fixtures this season with an ‘injury’. However, this ‘injury’ was rather convenient as it accrued at the same time Barcelona became interested in the Brazilian.
Barcelona have struggled so far this season and after selling Neymar to PSG they have been in the market to strengthen their squad. One of their main targets has been Coutinho. With the window almost shut that deal is looking more likely and could be done by 7 pm today.
Therefore, if Coutinho leaves Liverpool, that will leave a big gap in their squad. The Brazilian was one of Klopp’s star players last season. He scored 13 goals and earned seven assists in 31 Premier League appearances. So, with Coutinho off, Lemar is surely the ideal replacement?
Lemar like Coutinho plays primarily as a left winger and like Coutinho, Lemar has flair and even more pace. Also, Lemar is four years younger than Coutinho. So, he would have even more chance than Coutinho to develop which is an exciting prospect given how good he already is.
Lemar scored nine goals and got 11 assists in Ligue 1 last season which shows he is a quality left winger. Furthermore, Lemar scored two and assisted five in the Champions League for Monaco last season. This is another reason Liverpool need to sign Lemar as they are in the Champions League this year and having a player of Lemar’s experience and ability in the completion would be excellent for Klopp.
Lemar is a must buy for Liverpool, especially if they’re going to sell Coutinho today.
