According to reports, Swansea City are eyeing a move for Chelsea’s fringe forward Loic Remy as Paul Clement has decided to boost his attack with the huge sum that the South Wales club got with the sale of Gylfi Sigurdsson to Everton. The French forward is definitely out of the Italian manager’s grand plans this season and will be looking for regular playing team after yet another failed stint with Crystal Palace.
Chelsea have already brought in Alvaro Morata with Michy Batshuayi as the second choice for the centre forward role. And with Diego Costa also available but in exile, they now have three strikers with hardly any place for Remy, who has largely been unimpressive in the Premier League so far.
Swansea City are without their main striker Fernando Llorente at the moment who is recovering from his arm injury. While the likes of Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew have held the mast well, manager Paul Clement would still want a striker on the bench as a backup for the long and gruelling season. However, among the many hindrances in landing Remy from Chelsea, one is his £80,000-a-week contract.
The South Wales side is unlikely to afford it. And if reports are to believed, according to Premier League rules, one Premier League club cannot loan more than one player from a top-flight club of the same league at any given time. Hence, with Abraham already on loan from Stamford Bridge, Swansea aren’t allowed to get Remy on loan.
Apparently, their pursuit of Ruben Loftus-Cheek had to be cancelled for this. This rule, however, only applies to Premier League clubs. Sunderland did bring in Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway on loan from Everton, but their second-tier status allowed them to do so.
The only other option for the Swans, in this case, remains a permanent move for Remy. Apart from the hefty wage, the unproven striker could also be a huge risk for the South Wales club. A goal-machine with Ligue 1 sides like Marseille and OGC Nice, Remy had a quiet start to his English career with Queens Park Rangers in 2012, as he could score six goals in 14 games.
However, his loan stint with Newcastle United next season wasn’t quite a failure as the French forward scored 14 goals in 26 games. QPR decided to leave him, with Chelsea buying him in 2014. Remy could score 14 goals and three assists over two seasons at the Bridge before being sent to Crystal Palace.
His underwhelming career in the league so far could be a huge hindrance for Swansea’s motivation to move for him. And with Manchester City’s Wilfried Bony an option for them, they are unlikely to go through with this deal. Do you think Swansea should sign Remy this summer?
