Sunderland haven’t had a great start to their new season in the Championship after their demotion from the Premier League last season. They looked terrible in the previous term and failed to hit the right chords and as a result, their drop was a fair result owing to their sporadic and helpless run of form. However, they should take encouragement from Newcastle United, who carved an immediate return to the English top division this term.
The Black Cats must better their form to clinch the needful but the scenario hasn’t looked very good for them. In fact, even the summer transfer window didn’t have any mercy on them so far as there have been plenty of departures of some very fine players, with not much to so for as far as the incomings are concerned. With James Vaughan, Aiden McGeady and Lewis Grabban being their offensive additions, they are still far from being a decent side attacking wise.
With only a few hours left for the closure of the summer transfer window, the Black Cats are perceived to make a late dash in order to enhance the quality of their squad. As per one of the latest reports by Sky Sports, Sunderland have put Crystal Palace’s attacking midfielder Jonny Williams on their radar and are in the final stages of finalising his move from the ranks of the Eagles on loan. The youngster has struggled to find first-team opportunities and thus, a move would make a lot of sense.
Williams emerged through the youth setup of Palace but hasn’t been successful in erecting a strong footing for himself in the London based club. However, he accumulated plenty of experience of English football during his loan moves to Nottingham Forest, MK Dons and a couple of seasons with Ipswich Town. Despite being an attacking midfielder, he can also ply his trade as a central midfielder as well as a left-sided midfielder.
The 23-year-old is a player who loves challenges and despite his diminutive figure, he isn’t afraid to get into tough battles. He toils relentlessly all over the pitch and presses the opposition’s defenders in order to force them into making mistakes. Williams controls the ball really well and has an excellent vision and passing technique, which makes him an appealing commodity in the final third. Although injuries have bothered him more often than not, he is a risk worth taking by Sunderland.
