The transfer market this summer has been one of the busiest in terms of the dealings that have taken place so far. However, Premier League side Southampton have not indulged in much of transfer activity so far, having signed only two players in the form of defender Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan and midfielder Mario Lemina from Juventus.
However, it seems like that the Saints are not far away from making their third signing of the season, as they are eyeing one of the best defenders from the last term, Ben Gibson, to become a part of their team. The 24-year-old centre back is currently playing for the Championship club Middlesbrough, who were relegated from the top tier in the last term.
Gibson played 38 matches for Middlesbrough in the last term, making a good impression in the Premier League as a pretty dependable figure. The English international displayed enormous amount of dedication and courage in the last term and was hailed as one of the future stars for his national side in the forthcoming days. In fact, owing to his gallant performances, he got the chance to represent his country and is in contention to be a part of the team for the forthcoming World Cup that will be played in 2018.
The player is known for his defensive abilities along with his leadership qualities, which made him one of the most dependable figures in the backline last season. Along with that, his towering frame in the heart of his defence has been considered good enough to make him a part of any of the top clubs in the Premier League.
Gibson has been eyed by a number of clubs in the Premier League, who are looking forward to bagging him for the new season in order to strengthen their squad.
Southampton are having some problems in their current squad with their mainstay in defence Virgil Van Dijk looking to leave the team this summer. The player has been linked with a number of clubs including the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool, and has reportedly handed the Southampton team management a transfer request.
In case the Dutchman leaves the team in the summer, Southampton will have to face a considerable amount of trouble in the new term and are already in the market to find a suitable replacement for the player. The 24-year-old English defender, who performed exceptionally well in the last term for his team, might be the perfect player to fit the bill for the South Coast club.
