The finest league in all of the football is constantly changing, and with it is the impermanence of each team’s players. However, Chelsea’s Willian is quite of an exemption to that rule.
The Brazilian footballer made it to headlines as news about his possible transfer to Manchester United surfaced. It seems like a pretty good thing if you’re a Man United fan, but it didn’t turn to fruition.
It’s because Willian reveals he rejected the offer to switch sides. We have seen how Willian struggled during the 2015-16 season.
He was still figuring how he would adjust to the management style of Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte. But despite it, he managed to defy the odds, being named as the Chelsea Player of the Year.
It was indeed a tumultuous season for the 29-year-old player, which is why his stay with the Chelsea was rocked quite a bit. But even that wasn’t enough to let Chelsea come up with a decision to release Willian to the Red Devils.
No Negotiation Needed
Willian says in one of his interviews that it was indeed difficult for him to be a perfect fit for the Blues’ roster. Fortunately, Coach Mourinho came to the rescue and helped him to improve his skills in accordance to Chelsea’s distinctive style-of-play, even if he’s with a different team now.
The Brazilian says that Mourinho was more than a coach to him as he became one of his closest friends, entrusting him to succeed with his determination and talent. And it’s because of this that Willian shows immense gratitude to Mourinho who has inspired him to become a better asset to Chelsea.
Willian added that Manchester’s management had a talk with his agent about a possible transfer. However, nothing happened as Chelsea wouldn’t allow any negotiations to happen in the first place.
Possible Reasons for Man United’s Willian Pursuit
Manchester United wouldn’t pursue Willian’s possible transfer interest if it weren’t for some possible reasons. The first of these reasons might be due to Willian’s lack of prominence in the game, having just played two full games last season.
Also, things weren’t looking good between the Brazilian and Conte. Then there’s Eden Hazard and Pedro who are undeniably higher-calibre players as compared to Willian.
But needless to say, these weren’t enough reasons for the South American to even think of transferring, as he’s vocal in saying that he’s satisfied in playing for Chelsea.
What the 2017-18 Premier League Season Holds for Willian
Eden Hazard has recently sustained an ankle injury. With this, William might finally take bigger responsibilities to himself, and it might be the debut he’s been waiting for.
This would also mean that he needs to step up his game a bit more. If he proves he can make it, then it would surely give him more prominence in the team.
But if things go the other way around just like how his recent defeat in the FA Community Shield went out and that trend continues, then it’s pretty likely that the Red Devils are going to seek out Willian one more time.
Willian Career Statistics
The Chelsea midfielder has made a total of 5 goals throughout his humble career, having made 4 in the FA Cup and one during his time with the Club Friendlies. It’s a fairly good statistic knowing that he still had 13 appearances.
What more if he’ll have an increased playing time? Willian is great in doing crossings, taking set pieces, and his excellence in dribbling is what makes him stand out.
Ball handling and passing are also some of his strengths, which make up for his lack of duelling capabilities and defensive contribution.
