Liverpool have been once again bogged down in their pursuit to sign a player. Following the breakdown of the Virgil Van Dijk deal, the Reds seem to have also missed the chance to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, as the Bundesliga outfit are not willing to sell the 22-year-old this summer.
However, reports have been mongering regarding Liverpool’s latest transfer target and if they are to be believed, the Reds are keen on signing FC Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal.
It’s high time for the club to sign at least one midfielder before the season starts. So, does it really make sense for the player or the club to make a move?
Even though Liverpool currently lack midfielders in their roster, the signing of Arturo Vidal might be ludicrous and to some extent needless. At least for the long term, Vidal, aged 30, probably has only two years and has already shown signs of deterioration last season. He was slow in midfield against quick paced opposition, sometimes he was also hesitant in passing and the Chilean also made the odd mistakes which cost Bayern a goal or two.
To make it even worse, the 30-year-old is sure to cost some serious amount of money, despite his age. Although there haven’t been any fee specified in the rumours but we expect it to be around 40-55 million euros. In addition, Vidal will also bag 150k euros per week. So, it will definitely cost a lot of fortune for the Merseyside club to get hold of ‘King Artur’.
However, Arturo Vidal might be perfect for Liverpool. He can quickly suit under the new conditions, and with Jurgen Klopp’s high pressing game, his physicality would be useful in dominating the midfield. Adam Lallana is out for two months and Barca are reportedly keen on Coutinho, which in turn suggests, Vidal won’t be having any problems getting playtime at Liverpool.
He is good at passing, he is strong at making tackles and more importantly, he knows how to dominate the midfield. Vidal also has the ability to score from long range, making him a real threat in midfield. It makes total sense if Jurgen Klopp identifies him as the final piece of the jigsaw and the one he needs to directly challenge for the Premier League title.
For Vidal, it seems to be a good move as well, considering the Bayern midfield is a bit over-stacked right now. Thiago Alcantara, Corentin Tolisso, James Rodriguez, Renato Sanches, Sebastian Rudy and Joshua Kimmich can all play in midfield, which will eventually limit the first team opportunities from Vidal, even though he’s still regarded as the top choice by Carlo Ancelotti.
However, Liverpool will face stiff competition from Inter, as the Italians have continued to splash the cash following last year’s mega money takeover from Chinese investors. Inter are also reportedly keen on signing Emre Mor – ironically, another Liverpool target – few sources claim that the Turkish midfielder is all set to sign for the Nerazzurris.
