Liverpool have started their Premier League season in a consistent way this term. While their first match was a hard-fought draw against a resilient Watford side, the second one was a much-desired win over Crystal Palace. The Reds are currently looking forward to make this season a memorable one after they clinched a fourth place finish in the last term in the league table.
The Reds have scored four goals so far in their campaign in their opening fixtures but have gone on to concede three as well, all of which came in their very first encounter of the season against Watford. That, however, has not been able to bring any changes in the mindset of the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who is determined to continue with his “gegenpressing” attacking brand of football to see off his opponents.
His plans have been well supported so far by the brilliant trio spearheading his side’s attack in the form of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. While the Brazilian and Egyptian forwards have scored their first goals of the season in the very first game in Premier League, the Senegalese international has made it two in two.
However, the German mastermind is sceptical about his team’s performance in the middle of the pitch and the lack of players who can thread quality balls into the attacking third for his strikers to get more opportunities to score goals.
The wily tactician is looking forward to getting a top class player in the central midfield position, whose pairing with Jordan Henderson and James Milner will get the overall quality of the Reds’ midfield up by a few notches and has identified the Croatian enforcer Mateo Kovacic as his primary target this summer.
The 23-year-old, who is currently playing for the Spanish champions Real Madrid, has been one of the most highly regarded players in the midfield for his club as well as country. His understanding with fellow countryman Luka Modric has been defining last season and has led his club to get a number of positive results under their belt in the last term.
However, the player has not been able to be a part of the first team on a regular basis throughout the season, which has probably made him look for a new club where he can get a permanent first team place. With the Merseyside club in the calling, it seems that the Croatian international might have found the right club which can help him in getting the much-desired place in their starting lineup in the new season and at the same time challenge for trophies.
