According to reports, Everton are now eyeing a shock move for Championship forward Kenneth Zohore as Ronald Koeman looks to add more depth to his centre forward position. The Cardiff City star from last season has been a hot subject this summer with many clubs turning their attention to him after his heroic second half performance.
Given that most of his suitors are lower or mid-table clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion and Hull City, Everton would surely have an advantage over them and if Ronald Koeman is pursuing him seriously, the Toffees are indeed the winners in this race.
After selling Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, the Dutch boss has struggled to fill that centre forward’s role with Wayne Rooney coming the closest in executing it perfectly. Koeman has been seen trying Sandro Ramirez and even Kevin Mirallas in that position, but with little effect. Zohore isn’t at their level yet, but Koeman surely believes in his ability.
Young Dominic Calvert Lewin has also excelled in that role and Zohore’s arrival could see a couple of talented youngsters giving competition to Wayne Rooney for the spot. Despite having numerous stars this summer, Everton have had an underwhelming start to the season with one win, one loss and a draw from three games.
With Gylfi Sigurdsson being the last big money move to arrive at Goodison Park, the fans are not expecting any major signings in the closing few days of the season. However, Zohore could be a thrilling arrival for the kind of presence he commands in the attacking third.
The Copenhagen-born striker had a scintillating second half last season when he scored 12 goals in 23 appearances in a sudden resurgence after Christmas. And he hasn’t quite stopped since then, scoring twice in Poland’s Under-21 European Championship and one goal this season in five games. He has also provided two assists.
An academy product of Danish giants FC Copenhagen, Zohore made his first big move to Serie A side Fiorentina, who decided to keep him on loan with clubs like Bröndby IF and IFK Göteborg before Odense Boldklub bought him on a free transfer. They decided to loan him out to Belgian side KV Kortrijk before Cardiff City came calling in 2016.
Zohore still has two years left with Cardiff but the Royals would let him go but only for the right offer as Koeman has reportedly already found out with an approach turned down. Everton, however, have to move fast again as Brighton & Hove Albion have been strongly linked with him over the last 24 hours, with Hull City fancying their chances.
