If reports are to be believed then London club Crystal Palace are now eyeing a late move for Tottenham Hotspur’s second choice shot stopper Michel Vorm as manager Frank De Boer looks to get in more competition for their current number one Wayne Hennessey.
The Eagles have had a pathetic start to their season as the likes of newly promoted Huddersfield Town handed them a heavy defeat that was followed by an away loss to Liverpool. Given the number of players that Palace have brought in since last winter in a bid to revamp their squad, the club should be doing much better than this and the fans have been outraged quite understandably.
Poor defending has been one of the biggest concerns for the club. Following the departure of Sam Allardyce and Mamadou Sakho from Selhurst Park, they seem to have lost that sting which helped them beat Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool last season. A leaky defence has been a regular for the club since last season and Hennessey has been left with little protection.
This has led to a kind of complacency creep into him and the club’s decision to allow Steve Mandanda to return to Marseille in July could backfire now as they are left with 38-year-old Julián Speroni as the second choice. A move for Michel Vorm seems logical given the fewer amount of chances he has got playing for the Lilywhites.
Since moving to White Hart Lane in 2014, Vorm has never been the first choice for Tottenham and his national career has been hampered as a result. He has been an understudy to Hugo Lloris for the past three years but De Boer, who knows him from when he was on the Dutch international team staff, believes in his potential and wants to give him more regular chances at Selhurst Park.
33-year-old Vorm could further go down the pecking order after Tottenham completed the signing of Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton on Wednesday. He was mostly used in the EFL Cup and the initial stages of the FA Cup last season and he isn’t likely to just settle for that this season too.
He has made just 10 league appearances for the North London club since joining in 2014 and earned 15 caps for Holland so far. And if Sky Sports are to be believed, then the Eagles are also eyeing moves for AS Roma’s Lukasz Skorupski and West Ham United’s Adrian of late. Hence, a further delay in contemplating his next move could see Vorm miss out on the chance.
