Premier League 2017-18 is already two-week old and it didn’t cease to amaze this time too. It had some shocks but mostly entertainment. Here are 3 top performers from the second week.
Jese Rodriguez- He could make all the difference for Stoke City this season by all means. The former Real Madrid star just arrived in the Premier League last week and started his campaign with a debut goal. Although the build up to the goal included numerous mistakes on Arsenal’s part from Granit Xhaka giving away cheaply to Nacho Monreal’s hesitant defending, Rodriguez’s sharp movements should be commended. He was by far the best among Stoke players taking the field and it could be seen in his touches, movements and dribbles.
Following his serious knee injury with the La Liga giants, he was sold to Paris Saint-Germain last summer, where he failed to get back his confidence. He spent the second half of last season with USD Palmas before deciding to return to the national spotlight with Premier League action. It was a wise move by Mark Hughes to have him take Marko Arnautovic’s position.
Marcos Alonso- Chelsea needed two absolutely thunderous strikes from their left wing-back Marcos Alonso to register a shocking win over Tottenham Hotspur on their new home turf. It can be safely said that the Blues weren’t the favourites arriving into the game given Spurs’ flawless run in the league last season and Chelsea’s suspensions from last game.
But, the Spaniard rose to the occasion just fine when needed as he gave his side an early lead with an inch-perfect free kick in the first half. Beating the wall and then someone as clinical as Hugo Lloris was a big deal and Alonso couldn’t have executed any better. The second came at a more crucial time after Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi conceded an own goal to give Spurs the equalizer from a set-piece. However, the Spaniard took his chance to perfection yet again as his strong low drive proved too much for Lloris at the near post.
Aaron Mooy- The former Manchester City player has continued his fine form from last season in the Championship. Following his assist to Steven Mounie in the last game, he produced a moment of magic yet again against Newcastle United this weekend. His shot from the edge of the box, after a one-two with Elias Kachunga, curled impeccably into the top corner.
After last week’s win over Crystal Palace, this win was hugely important for David Wagner’s side as it puts them in the second position.
