The defending champions Chelsea started their defence of the title in the worst possible way as they made a mess of things in their opening match against Burnley and ended up losing the tie 3-2. They also lost their captain and mainstay in the defence Gary Cahill and playmaker Cesc Fabregas to two consecutive red cards and will have to do without them in the next match as well to make things even worse for them.
The Blues coach Antonio Conte looked absolutely disappointed with the bizarre display of his defence as well as midfield, especially in the first half of the match and it might not be very late before the Italian starts to bring in more players to strengthen his team to the core. In fact, he has already got his eyes on a few players from European clubs as well the fellow Premier League outfits, one of them being the Portuguese defender Cedric Soares, who plays for the Premier League club Southampton.
The 25-year-old, who prefers to play in the right back position, joined the south coast club in 2015 after he made 94 appearances for his former club Sporting Lisbon. He has been termed as one of the most influential players in a full back position and has been instrumental for his club as well as for his national team. He played a very crucial role in the defence for the Portuguese team in their triumph in the 2016 European Championship.
The player is known for his darting runs down the right-hand side and is nothing less than a livewire on the field. He can make the game a delight to watch with his skills and has the ability to cross the ball into the attacking third, so as to make it difficult for the opponents to contain his teammates from scoring goals against their team. He is also able to unleash powerful shots on the opposition goal from a long range outside the box.
The West London club already made a number of big name signings in the summer but after their dismal performance in the first match are looking cautious and looking to bring in more players in their defensive ranks.
The south coast club, who ended their last term in the eighth position in the league table, are in contention over selling their prized players in the summer. They are well aware of the importance of Cedric in the team and will look to resist the temptation of a big deal with some more days left in the transfer market.
