Bayern Munich edged past rivals Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup. This marks Bayern’s first win at the Signal Iduna Park in over two years, albeit on penalties. The game went down to some nail biting moments, and at the end, the visitors showed great resolve to clinch the DFL Supercup. A great way to start the season indeed! Here are the Bayern Munich players rated in their triumph over Dortmund.
Sven Ulreich(7.5/10):
Failed to keep out Christian Pulisic for Dortmund’s first goal of the evening. Also looked a bit jaded returning from a minor injury. Eventually, the former Stuttgart keeper redeemed himself in the penalty shootout.
Joshua Kimmich(9/10):
Did a fantastic job on the right flank. Dortmund’s exceptionally high line of defence ensured acres of space for Kimmich in behind, eventually finding Lewandowski for the equalizer in the 18th minute. Also showed great leadership potential playing as a right back.
Javi Martinez(6.5/10): Followed his terrible pre-season form, with an equally awful performance. Gave the ball away to Pulisic for the Dortmund opener whilst also letting the opposition attackers whizz past him throughout the evening. He needs to improve in order to find more game time.

Mats Hummels(7/10):
Also looked tired and slow in defence. Made some shaky passes and wasn’t up to his A-game for sure. A mark of a completely out of sorts defender.
Rafinha(8/10):
An all-round performance from the Brazilian fullback, who started at left back. He effectively played his part in disfiguring Dortmund while they were in possession. He also linked up well with Franck Ribéry on the left flank and ushed forward, frequently.
Arturo Vidal(7/10):
Again, proved to be a little too slow against the dynamic Dortmund. He lost sight of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, eventually costing them the second goal. The Chilean looked clumsy and aggression didn’t help him either. He was lucky not to get a card for bringing down Gonzalo Castro, just at the edge of the box.
Sebastian Rudy(9.5/10):
Perhaps the best player on the field, Rudy perpetrated Bayern’s possession game while his impressive positioning and understanding of the game single handily prevented Dortmund playing forward from the middle. He made some important contributions in attack as well. The former Hoffenheim midfielder has been an absolute steal!
Corentin Tolisso(7.5/10):
While Rudy was brought in for free, Corentin Tolisso became Bayern’s most expensive transfer acquisition this summer. However, The new signing only put in an average performance against Dortmund.
Thomas Müller(9/10):
He was great working as a ramdeuter. His clever positioning allowed Bayern to create more chances as the game progressed. It was certainly reassuring seeing him back in full flow. The game could have taken a different shape, had James Rodriguez started over the 27-year-old.
Franck Ribéry(8/10):
Was decent starting in as a left winger. Ribéry linked up well with Rafinha and initiated a few chances early on. However, one would think, that he could have done much better.
Robert Lewandowski(8.5/10):
Missed a glorious opportunity to score within the first ten minutes. Have to say, Dortmund’s high line of defence helped the Polish International, as he played relatively higher, looking for the perfect opportunity to run in behind the backline. He was decisive with his finishing when the real chances beckoned.
Subs
Niklas Süle(8/10):
Replaced the struggling Javi Martinez within the hour mark. Süle showed why he can be a real defensive asset for his club, with some tough tackles and dangerous headers, notably hitting the bar. He also showed terrific composure to score from the penalty.
Kingsley Coman(7/10):
Thomas Müller was taken off in the 67th minute, presumably to avoid any injuries. Coman was okay playing from the right flank.
Renato Sanches(NA):
Came on for new signing Corentin Tolisso late on in the game but didn’t make much of an impact.
