West Bromwich Albion are ready to step up their pursuit of Chris Smalling. The English defender’s stock has fallen since Jose Mourinho’s arrival and Tony Pulis thinks he would be able to convince the player to don the Baggies’ jersey next season.
The 27-year old’s future is looking very bleak after the arrival of Victor Lindelof. United spent £30.7m to bring the Swedish international to the Old Trafford which has further intensified the doubts over Smalling’s place in the side.
Jose Mourinho is not a big fan of the player and wouldn’t mind letting him join the Baggies. Smalling has a price tag of £10m and his valuation has alerted a number of clubs.
Smalling began the season alongside Eric Bailly in the United backline but a number of injuries saw his progress hampered as he lost his place subsequently.
Smalling managed just 18 appearances last season as he gradually fell down the pecking order under the Portuguese. A number of players have switched their allegiance recently and Smalling could be the third one to make his way to the Hawthorns.
After the departure of Jonas Olsson, currently, there are only two recognised centre-backs in the Baggies side. Johny Evans and Gareth McAuley have been sensational in the West Brom defence but the latter’s age could be a hindrance in the upcoming season.
Smalling emerged as the first choice centre-back under former manager Louis Van Gaal as he was adjudged the player of the year for his consistent performances. Following the stupendous campaign, he started last year on a very positive note but luck didn’t favour him.
Smalling’s absence proved to be a blessing in disguise for Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones who perhaps gave their best performances in a United shirt so far. When he remains fit, Jones could be one of the most versatile defenders in the Premier League.
With the World Cup looming large, Smalling’s primary aim is to book a place on the flight to Russia. He knows the importance of this season and wants to prove his credentials at the Old Trafford.
But it would be hard for him to get sufficient game time so he might opt for a move elsewhere. Recently Jake Livermore epitomised his success as he got a call up to the Three Lions squad following his impressive performance for the Baggies. So all is not over for the 31 times capped English international who could easily earn a berth in the World Cup side.
