Watford reportedly had an offer knocked back by Lyon for their star forward Maxwel Cornet. The Hornets offered £10.5m only to see it rejected by the French side.
Premier League clubs are pretty aware of the current competition in the league and apart from the top six, lower ranked clubs are also spending money which constitutes a major chunk of the prize money and the lucrative television rights.
Watford were pretty lucky to survive the relegation last season but newly appointed manager Marco Silva is ready to set the bar higher for the next season. Silva impressed in his initial approach when he was at the helm of Hull City. He almost turned around things for the Tigers but couldn’t keep them up in the top flight.
Quique Sánchez Flores had led Watford to an impressive 13th position but then their situation deteriorated in the following season under the tutelage of Walter Mazzarri. But the appointment of Marco Silva has sent out a strong message across and has led us to be in the know of the ambitious approach from the club who are eyeing a much-improved position next year.
The 20-year-old got few opportunities last season but he made his presence felt by finding the net 10 times. After the departure of Alexandre Lacazette who left the club to join Arsenal, Cornet could take Lacazette’s position up front but has some stiff competition in the form of Bertrand Traore who joined the French club from Chelsea in a permanent move this summer.
The youngster signed a new five-year contract last summer and it could be very difficult for the Hornets to bring the player to the Vicarage Road. The left winger can be stationed anywhere across the front three.
The Ivory Coast international represented France at various levels but later preferred to represent his native country. Cornet has expressed his desire to play more and such an exposure early on can only help him and this could be a good opportunity for him to showcase his talent.
Premier League is regarded as the most competitive league in the world right now and proving himself on one of the biggest platforms would be a boost for his career. Silva loves to field youngsters and Cornet could be a good resource for him.
Watford have already signed a number of exciting players and Cornet could be the newest addition to the side.
