Emerging Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a move for AS Monaco centre-half Kamil Glik. The Polish international had played an essential role for the Ligue 1 Champions last season and the club is unwilling to let him go at any cost. However, the lure of Premier League could prove irresistible.
The North London side are the only English top-flight side yet to make a major signing this summer and with the season commencing within a month, they surely aren’t the most comfortable knowing that fact. Their transfer priorities so far, have been quite befuddling too.
Spurs, undoubtedly, have one of the most complete sides in the league with little additions required in the defensive positions; and the primary targets for Mauricio Pochettino has to be full-backs with the likes of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose linked with a move away from the club. But, the only signing they have come closest to so far has been that of Argentine centre-half Juan Foyth.
Spurs have one of Premier League’s best centre-half duos in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, and with the likes of Eric Dier perfectly capable of taking their places as and when needed, the central defence should be their least of worries. Glik, however, will be a definite cushion for them given his huge experience.
The 29-year-old has been a leader for Monaco last season guiding the youth-dominated side to the title. His contributions were massively appreciated and if reports are to be believed then Monaco are offering him an offer of 3.5 million Euros (£3.1m) per year to extend his stay with them. Tottenham, however, are ready to offer him a slightly better deal of 4 million Euros (£3.5 million) per year.
An academy product of Polish side WSP Wodzislaw, Glik made his first big move to La Liga giants Real Madrid’s C side from UD Horadada. However, the short trial didn’t go well and he was released soon with yet another Polish side, Piast Gliwice, picking him up this time.
One short loan stint with Serie B side FC Bari 1908 and Torino got him in 2011, where he really flourished. Spurs were known to be an admirer of him and even came close to landing him in 2015 but nothing materialised and Monaco got him last time. Clearly, the centre-back is a late bloomer and still has some good three-four peak years ahead of him. Glik hasn’t been much motivated by the speculations and Monaco are likely to retain him.
