If reports are to be believed, North London side Tottenham Hotspur are now weighing up a bid for Argentine centre-half Juan Foyth, who plays for Estudiantes. The Lilywhites are expected to hold talks with the South American club officials this week and the teenager should arrive soon.
Spurs have been quiet in the transfer market so far with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all completing major signings. And although they have a far more balanced side than the rest, the defence is an area Mauricio Pochettino would need backup desperately.
He has been holding out Kevin Wimmer for sale over the past few weeks and looks like the Austrian international is surely a goner now. Foyth has impressed one and all in the Argentine football system with his game reading abilities at just 19 and is among one of the most highly-rated players. He was present in the national side when they lost to England 3-0 in last month’s Under-20 World Cup.
Tottenham could reportedly land him for somewhere in the region of £10 million, which would definitely be a cut-price deal, given the raw talent he is and the qualities he possesses. Being young is bound to make him faster than most in the central defence in Tottenham’s first team and the player knows to use his pace to good use.
Pochettino’s passing style of play, which focusses in pressing opponents high up could suit him perfectly. A wrong ball could be recovered quickly and that blended with his perfect passing makes him a thrilling prospect. At 187cm, he is definitely a good choice for the Premier League, which sees more of the aerial duels.
Foyth joined Estudiantes as an 11-year-old in 2009 and he has wasted little time in making a name for himself. Coming up through the ranks, the player broke into the first team in January this year. His impressive displays had earned him a promotion to the top-flight squad and he would expect to make it to the 23-man squad Argentine team for World Cup next year.
And under the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, the player is bound to flourish. If reports are true then former Manchester United player, Juan Veron, who is Estudiantes’ president now, is expected to meet with Spurs representative for discussions in Italy in the next few days.
Foyth hasn’t hidden his willingness to play in the Premier League. Speaking to media, he said, “I like competitive leagues more than anything. I always watch the English, Italian and Spanish leagues.”
