Swansea City have roped in Arnor Gudjohnsen who happens to be the half-brother of former Chelsea and Barcelona player Eidur Gudjohnsen. The 16-year-old prodigy will be joining the Swansea academy where he will be under the strict guidance of Jon Grey and Anthony Wright.
The mood at the Liberty Stadium has been very vibrant for the last few days as the Swans have snapped up a number of players. The Welsh side has one of the best academies in the country and Paul Clement has emphasised on the development of the young players.
Swansea refurbished their academy recently as Jon Grey and Anthony Wright have been handed the charges. Swansea have signed a number of players including former Manchester United youngster Jayden Reid in a bid to rejig their academy.
Gudjohnsen moved to the club from Icelandic club Breidablik UBK. The 16-year-old who has signed a three-year contract exclaimed, “It’s great to be here. I am looking forward to the challenge and I am excited to get started.
“My dad and brother have helped me a lot throughout my career. They have given me good advice over the years.”
Gudjohnsen was on a trial with this club and only after impressing the club hierarchy, they decided to reward the player with a contract. Gudjohnsen’s arrival enhanced the Icelandic contingent at the club as Gylfi Sigurdsson, another Icelandic who has been one of the best playmakers in the Premier League, is there to guide him.
The elder Gudjohnsen has won the Premier League with Chelsea and La Liga with Barcelona. The 38-year-old is still regarded as one of the best players to have ever donned the Iceland jersey and it remains to be seen whether his brother could emulate his achievements or not.
Incidentally, Swansea had tried to sign the senior Gudjohnsen during Brendan Rodgers’ tenure but the move didn’t materialise. Swansea have also snapped up Tammy Abraham from Chelsea and midfielder Roque Mesa from Las Palmas as Clement has been trying to build a squad capable of throwing a challenge to the bigger teams in the upcoming season. The Swans endured a tough season but managed to have the last laugh as they survived the relegation.
Gudjohnsen is the third member of the family with football connection as his father Arnor Gudjohnsen Senior was a dominant player in his time. He played for clubs like Anderlecht and Bordeaux and also appeared 73 times for Iceland.
