Sunderland have lost their two goalkeepers within a short span of time and newly appointed manager Simon Grayson has been searching a new number one for his side. According to reports, The Black Cats have targeted Leeds United shot stopper Robert Green.
Following their drop to the Championship, a number of players left the club in search of new challenges in the next season. Bringing a new number one is currently the priority for the new manager and the 37-year-old could be the newest entrant at the Stadium Of Light.
Leeds had a bittersweet campaign last season as they maintained a steady form throughout the season. But they succumbed at the final hurdle as they couldn’t make it to the playoffs after all the hard work.
Monk’s departure led the club to appoint Thomas Christiansen who has already started his job at the Elland Road. Despite making most of the campaign last term, Green’s future has been cast into doubt after the arrival of Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen who is expected to be handed the responsibility to guard the Leeds goal next term.
Sunderland will be feeling the heat after a disappointing last season. Grayson knows he needs to have adequate depth to survive the rigorous campaign in the Championship and his initial aim is to lead the club to the playoffs.
Green will prefer a move to the Stadium Of Light where he will be in the thick of the action. The 37-year-old was an ever present in the Leeds side last season and despite being on the wrong side of thirty-five, he was the preferred choice for Monk.
Leeds are currently in Austria as all the players are going through rigorous training sessions. The newly appointed gaffer is trying to project his new signings into his setup.
The Black Cats hierarchy wants to seal the deal as soon as possible as Grayson wants him to be a part of his pre-season camp. He will be available for a very meagre amount and Sunderland do have the cash in their hand to fund the transfer.
The 37-year-old did sign a one-year extension last season at the Elland Road but given his current condition, it won’t be difficult for him to force a move from the club.
The veteran keeper is at the twilight of his career and he wants to have regular first team football till his retirement and Sunderland can definitely provide him with that.
