Ruben Loftus-Cheek is one of the many promising stars that Chelsea are yet to utilise properly. The Blues academy product burst onto the scene in the 2014/15 season but despite impressing a number of times, he has failed to nail down a place in the first team at the Bridge.
The midfielder is one of the few Chelsea youngsters who has become a popular figure at the Stamford Bridge alongside Tammy Abraham and others. But at this crucial juncture of his career, he should be playing more regularly but instead of that, he has been restricted to a bit-part role at the club.
The talented youngster appeared in six matches in the Premier League last season and will be looking for more game time this season. But the way Chelsea are shaping, it has increasingly become difficult for him to break into the first team, so perhaps it would be better for him to find his way out of the Stamford Bridge.
Southampton have reportedly enquired about the availability of this highly rated midfielder. The club has a young bunch of players and the 21-year-old will only enhance the quality of the side.
The Saints didn’t have a season they were hoping, for but they did manage to reach the finals of the EFL cup where Manchester United got the better of them. But nevertheless, for the last couple of seasons, Southampton have emerged as a potential firepower in the Premier League.
The Saints have been conferred the title of a “selling” club for their knack of selling their most prized assets. The likes of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Gareth Bale, Nathaniel Clyne have all left the club to join other big names all around Europe in the last few years.
Newly appointed manager Manuel Pellegrino will be looking at a number of players who could be fit into his system and Loftus-Cheek could be that player. The 21-year-old is basically a central midfielder but can also be tried further upfront in a more advanced position.
Loftus-Cheek has been a prominent figure for the England U-21s and his neat work in the centre of midfield in the recent European Championship hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Keeping in mind Chelsea’s loan strategy, it is very surprising that the player hasn’t moved from Stamford Bridge but he has to take a majestic step to work on his career development this summer. Chelsea won’t stand in his way as the young midfielder has expressed his intention to leave the club. So is he the right man for Southampton?
