If reports are to be believed, Tottenham Hotspur are now eyeing a move for Argentine club Estudiantes centre-half Juan Foyth priced at £10 million, as Mauricio Pochettino prepares for what potentially could be the most important season of his career.
With other title challengers already completing most of their marquee signings, the Lilywhites are yet to make a big move in the transfer market. Despite having a balance and one of the complete squads in the Premier League, Spurs will definitely want some defensive and midfield reinforcements to go all the way next season. So could Foyth be the man for the Spurs? Here is a scout report of the new name doing the rounds:
Background
Born in La Plata of Argentina, Foyth was quick to choose football as his career following his keen interest in the game. The football crazy nation further worked as a catalyst in intensifying his passion and he joined Argentina’s famed club Estudiantes which boasts of having players like Manuel Gregorio Pelegrina, Ricardo Roberto Infante, Alberto Máximo Zozaya and more.
He joined them in 2009 as an 11-year-old and it took him just eight years to become an established player of the first team. It was only last winter that he started getting regular football in the first team as he was promoted from Estudiantes B-side to the top flight squad.
Positives
Foyth has come to the fore for his brilliant tackling and passing attributes. At 19, the player possesses some brilliant speed, which makes him a tremendous asset for making those recovery runs. Pochettino can play with an extreme high backline with Foyth at the back, and his heading abilities are above par. His game reading technique makes him a thrilling prospect, who can only get better with time.
Negatives
However, inexperience will be his biggest foe for sure. To survive in the Premier League, he would need to have a very good presence of mind and plenty of stamina, which he is struggling with, at the moment. Physicality remains yet another concern for the player as although he is a decent 187cm, he lacks the strength to hold off defenders.
Future
However, at only 19-year-old, Foyth definitely is a raw talent who needs a huge amount of polishing over most of his attributes, but his matured way of reading the game surely makes him an interesting prospect for both the club as well as the nation.
And at Tottenham, he could expect a breakthrough season real soon with Pochettino already willing to let go the third choice, Kevin Wimmer. Few impressive games and the South American can soon find himself starting alongside the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Being Argentine, Pochettino knows the strengths and weaknesses of Foyth quite well and could bring the most out of him in no time.
