The arrival of Ederson from Benfica has already put Claudio Bravo’s Manchester City future in doubt and according to the recent reports, Guardiola has started the proceedings to phase him out from the Etihad Stadium.
Bravo had a very difficult start to his Premier League career and couldn’t really recover from his earlier hiccups. Despite his high profile arrival from Barcelona, Guardiola had to seek the help of his second choice keeper Willy Caballero after Bravo failed to do his duty properly.
Upon on his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola has pretty much made clear, his idea of utilising a ball playing keeper in the side which led to the ouster of Joe Hart. The English number one who had been the preferred choice in between the sticks was shipped to Torino on loan.
Guardiola’s move to replace Hart with the veteran Chilean seemed to have dealt a major blow to their title contentions as the Chilean international was very error prone right from the start of his City spell.
He could have had a red card in his first game when he fouled Wayne Rooney inside the box but was lucky to survive the call. His floundering nature was again exploited by Everton as the Toffees made Bravo’s condition more miserable by putting in four goals past him with four shots at the Goodison Park.
Let us take a look at 3 players the eccentric Catalan manager could consider to effect a complete overhaul of the keeper contingent at the Etihad Stadium.
Pepe Reina
Having played in the Premier League before, he is well acquainted of how the game is being played on the English soil. The 34-year-old held talks with his former manager Rafa Benitez who is in the charge of Newcastle United but decided to extend his stay with Napoli.
Pep is also a vast admirer of the player but had a bid of £2.5m rejected by the Serie-A giants.
Kasper Schmeichel
The Danish international has been one of the most in demand keepers in the Premier League. Emulating the success of his dad was always considered very difficult but he has proved his mettle.
His keeping skills were one of the reasons behind Leicester’s famous title triumph in the 2015/16 season and his tremendous European displays last season made sure the Foxes had something to take back home from their tryst with Champions League.
Jasper Cillessen
The Barcelona shot stopper is also one of the keepers who is comfortable with both his hands and feet. The rise of Marc-Andre ter Stegen has restricted him to the bench mostly in the last season and the Dutch keeper is open to a move.
A move to the Premier League won’t hurt him much as the idea to work under one of the most talented gaffer makes sense.
