Liverpool have reportedly failed in their bid to land Real Madrid’s teen sensation Marco Asensio after the youngster was sensationally linked with a move out of Real Madrid. Following his decent season with Los Blancos where he won some of the biggest silverwares possible, the attacking midfielder is in hot demand.
Critics have widely predicted him to be the next big thing in European football and lack of regular game time could be a huge hindrance in his progress, which is a distinct possibility in Santiago Bernabeu next season. Real Madrid will be under tremendous pressure next season following their almost perfect campaign last term and manager Zinedine Zidane is highly unlikely to risk a young star on a regular basis.
Arsenal and Liverpool have been reported as his prime suitors ahead of next season and Jurgen Klopp’s one failed attempt means he could go in with another one in the coming weeks. The Reds have already brought in Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke in their attack but their left flank remains tremendously undermanned at the moment.
Apart from Phillipe Coutinho, who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, Klopp doesn’t have any other feasible option on his left wing. And their green light to Sheyi Ojo to leave on a temporary move this summer further thins his options. While Asensio will be a definite upgrade on the club’s existing squad, getting him remains equally difficult.
The 21-year-old has clearly been an early bloomer in his career who is currently on the verge of reaching the peak. He shone brilliantly at the Under-21 European Championships and although Spain failed to win the tournament, Asensio was nominated in the team of the tournament.
In Spain’s domestic league, Asensio has hardly got a chance with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale ahead of him in the pecking order. But, his persistent and dazzling movements led him to score 10 goals and register three assists in all competitions for them, despite starting just 14 times in all the 39 appearances.
It was his goal in the Champions League final against Juventus which showed that Zidane was right to trust him over James Rodriguez. Naturally a left-winger, the forward is quite versatile up front giving Zidane lot of positions to experiment. He was also seen playing as a central midfielder, a centre-forward and on the right wing last season.
With Champions League at stake next season, Liverpool would want to upgrade their bench as much as possible, and the addition of Asensio could surely send fans into meltdown.
