Jose Mourinho is one of the highest spenders in the world of football and his stint at Old Trafford has not been any different. The Portuguese manager has already spent close to £300m in just over a year at Manchester United, spending on the likes of Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Romelu Lukaku.
He is still looking to spend insane amounts on his top transfer targets but in a recent interview, insisted that his club will not be held ransom like other rival clubs this summer. Speaking to the media recently, Mourinho took on himself to explain why clubs like Manchester City are over spending on players this summer.
United spent £75m on Lukaku, which could move up to £90m while Victor Lindelof cost no less than €35m but Mourinho felt that he is used to paying up for star players and that if other clubs try to follow him, they are doing a mistake.
Referring to Manchester City’s £50m expenditure on Kyle Walker, Mourinho said, “The strange thing now is I am used to teams paying big amounts for big players. And now everybody is paying big amounts for good players. And there is a difference between good players and big players and now the figures are really crazy also for normal players.”
For someone who does not know Mourinho, these words will shock them. The arrogance of the manager, who believes that his transfer business makes more sense than any other club’s business, this summer, is something that every Mourinho hater is used to by now.
In fact, Mourinho has now spent up to €180m on just two players in Pogba and Lukaku and holds the record for the most expensive transfer in the history of the game and quite frankly, it is just amusing to see him speak about the way the other teams are spending their funds.
Manchester City have in the past over paid for players like John Stones and Raheem Sterling and it is not something Pep Guardiola has done at the club. The Etihad outfit is one of the richest clubs in world football and they are ready to back their manager with the funds, which is always good for a club.
However, Manchester United are in a different position as even though they stand as one of the richest clubs alongside their local rivals, they do not have unlimited resources and will now look to sell players to balance their books.
Mourinho is a strange manager whose success in winning trophies has turned him into an arrogant man. He may have come out with these comments to convince Inter Milan to sell Croatian international Ivan Perisic at a lower price but at the moment, Mourinho makes little to no sense talking about over spending on players this summer.
