Hull City are edging towards the signing of defender Ondrej Mazuch from Sparta Prague. The defender has been with the Hull squad as Leonid Slutsky’s side are currently in Portugal preparing for the upcoming season.
The Tigers badly need some reinforcements in the squad having parted ways with a clutch of players since the transfer window opened. The 28-year-old defender impressed Slutsky in training and also took part in their 1-0 win over Benfica. He looked pretty confident as he partnered Michael Dawson in the backline.
Mazuch has been granted permission to train with the Tigers by his current club Sparta Prague and has impressed the Russian gaffer who is now considering to sign the lanky defender permanently.
Hull lost Harry Maguire to Leicester City while Andrea Ranocchia returned to Inter Milan after his successful loan spell leaving Slutsky with little to no options at the back. The recently appointed boss only has Dawson as a recognised centre back and needs to beef up his rearguard quite vastly.
Mazuch arrived at Fiorentina as a teenager from Brno but his stint at the Serie A club turned out to be a painful one as he appeared just two times for them. He then had short spells with Anderlecht and Dnipro before he was picked up by Sparta Prague.
He put pen to paper on a four and a half year contract and despite impressing at the club he has been given the permission to talk with another club for a potential transfer just after one year. Slutsky needs a cool head in the backline to shore up his defence and the Czech international could do wonders with his experience.
Having over 200 appearances under his belt, Mazuch has experience. Hull still need a number of defenders but the addition of Mazuch would bring stability to the side.
He is expected to don the Tigers jersey at least one more time when the Championship side entertains Nantes in a pre-season friendly. He will have the chance to establish his authority in the Hull side as Slutsky has been looking towards his fourth signing of the summer.
However, it will affect the club coffers as he is expected to cost around £2m. Hull will be looking for some signings as Slutsky has been trying to fill up the numerous voids in his team.
The upcoming season would be very crucial for them as his promotional rivals have also invested a significant amount in building quality squads and it remains to be seen how the season unfolds.
