Ronald Koeman seems to be a man on a mission at the Goodison Park as, in what is just his second summer transfer window with Everton, he is looking to establish a side that can dominate the league for years to come. The first team additions to the squad will always be welcome but what Koeman has done well is to find some promising youngsters who could hold the fort in the future.
The likes of Nathangelo Markelo, Josh Bowler and Boris Mathis have all joined the Merseyside outfit this summer and are expected to spend the year at the academy and another player who could be on his way to the club is Newcastle sensation, Lewis Gibson.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton have agreed on terms with the player for a move this summer and are hoping to fend off interests from fellow Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of the 17-year old, who is making his mark at the highest stage at the St James’.
Born and brought up in County Durham, Lewis is the sibling of Liam Gibson, who also plays for Newcastle, in their U23 side. He has risen through that ranks at the club in the last couple of years, making 112 appearances for the U18 side, and his performances saw him earn a place in the Newcastle reserves late last season.
Also scouted by Liverpool, Manchester City and Celtic in the past, Lewis, at his age, is not entitled to sign a contract and is only running on a scholarship with the Magpies and Everton should not find it too difficult to land him this summer.
A versatile defender, who can play at left-back or centre back, the 17-year old was an integral part of the English side that did well in the European Championships in Croatian recently, where he also picked up a goal, playing as a full-back.
He is highly rated by the fraternity at the St James’ and his parent club also wants him to sign a new contract but because of his age, Lewis is free to talk to any other club and Everton seem to be winning the race for his signature.
He is surely a potential star and Koeman will hope that he can turn him into another John Stones at the Academy, one, who might stay back and help the club in the long run. Do you think Ronald Koeman is doing the right thing by signing these youngsters?
