Barcelona is on the verge of getting rid of their injury-plagued defender Thomas Vermaelen, who was sent on loan for the last season to the Italian giants AS Roma. He was able to make only 12 appearances in the Serie A last term, owing to the fact that he has been prone to injuries throughout the majority of his career, making it rather difficult for him to have regular outings.
The Belgian ace has been a part of some of the best teams in Europe and has played for the Premier League biggie Arsenal, whom he joined in 2009 from Ajax Amsterdam. He was awarded the captain’s armband at the North London club as well. However, he made a move to the Spanish giants Barcelona in 201 and has spent an injury stricken career at Nou Camp so far.
His tendency to get prone to injury from time to time has been a hindrance to his career for sure, but that has not been able to stop the continuous flow of offers the Belgian defender is getting in the recent times. With the Catalan giants set to let go off him in the next season, it might be the opportunity for the ex-Arsenal player to head back to the Premier League once again.
Reportedly, Premier League club Crystal Palace are interested in bringing in the Barcelona defender to their club in the next season to strengthen their defence, which has been a reason for major concern for him in the last season.
The Eagles have got a new manager for their outfit in the summer in the form of the Dutch legend Frank De Boer, and he is quite interested in making a bid for the 31 year old defender from Barcelona.
The Eagles had faced a lot of struggle with their backline in the last term as well, but it was largely due to Liverpool’s defender Mamadou Sakho, who is totally out of favour under their current manager Jurgen Klopp. He arrived on loan in January at the South London club and dished out heroic performances to save the season for the Eagles.
The Frenchman is the primary target for the Crystal Palace boss Frank De Boer, but his release clause is £30m so, the Dutchman has been compelled to transfer his focus towards other options available at his disposal, and the name of the Thomas Vermaelen is being regarded as the most viable one. But is he the right man for Palace?
