In yet another shocking development, reports are claiming that Chelsea are now weighing up a bid for Manchester City’s star striker Sergio Aguero and to everyone’s surprise, the Manchester outfit isn’t expected to be a hindrance in it. The Argentine international has been on City’s exit list since last season when manager Pep Guardiola frequently handed Gabriel Jesus, first team chance over him.
Chelsea are in deep waters at the moment after they were sensationally ambushed by rivals Manchester United in the pursuit of former Everton hitman Romelu Lukaku. Antonio Conte was so confident of Chelsea’s ability to negotiate a deal with the Belgian before everyone else as is clear from Conte’s decision to sell Diego Costa, which was announced long back.
Now, with the London club missing out on both of them, they are desperate to fill the void and have pushed the panic button. The Blues definitely are one of the richest sides in European football and it shouldn’t be very difficult to land the hottest prospects in the striker’s role, but their sudden pursuit of all the cream, makes them look more like West Ham United and are consequently finding it difficult in landing the right man.
Their pursuit of Alvaro Morata has gotten complicated as the deal looks unlikely now, which leaves Chelsea with Pierre-Aubameyang and Serie A sensation Andrea Belotti as the only like-for-like replacement for the Spaniard. However, going for Sergio Aguero would make a lot more sense given his experience in Premier League as he could be thrown right into the wire from day one.
Despite not being a like for like replacement for Diego Costa, Aguero could be tremendously effective in front of Chelsea’s skilled playmakers in Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro. Diego Costa had mostly relied on his strength and annoying antiques to get his way through opponent’s defence, while Aguero is pure quality.
The most prolific goal scorer in the Premier League since joining Etihad back in 2011, Aguero has scored a whopping 169 goals and 51 assists in 253 appearances so far, winning them two Premier League titles in the process. It is safe to say that City will never get anyone to fill the void left by him, but Guardiola has other plans.
The biggest criticism hurled at Aguero has been his low work rate, which is the prime reason why Jesus has got the nod over him. And, the Argentine trying to change his game, according to his boss, has done him little good, as he could score only 20 goals in 31 league appearances last season. The 29-year-old still has three years left at his peak and he would want to get the most of the action in them. But can he be a hit at the Stamford Bridge?
