Year after year Southampton have produced brilliant players to maintain their brilliant supply line to the English football as a number of top clubs have benefitted from their academy products. For the past few seasons continuously, they have lost a number of influential players due to their limited financial ability.
The academy facility, Markus Liebherr Pavilion, has been the home to a number of high-profile players with the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alan Shearer, Adam Lallana and the list goes on and on. The Saints might have failed to use their younger players for their own benefit but their academy is still one of the most envied in the country.
Liverpool have been the biggest benefactors of Southampton players in recent times. Names like Peter Crouch, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne have done a fantastic job for the Reds and Southampton couldn’t help but lose these players to one of their rivals.
The Saints had an erratic season but some last minute revival of form earned them a top ten finish. With a number of players ready to depart the St Mary’s, the Saints need to recruit talented players across the world.
Mamadou Sakho
Virgil Van Dijk is destined to move elsewhere from the club. The 25-year-old is one of the most coveted defenders in the Premier League and a number of clubs have already started knocking the door of Claude Puel. Martin Caceres also will be looking for another club after he failed to get too much of a look-in.
Jurgen Klopp’s unwillingness to use Sakho at all describes his bitterness for the player and he would like to cash in on the player as much as he can. Sakho had a brief loan spell with Crystal Palace and he had been the most impressive player for the Eagles at the time of their relegation struggles. Sakho would be a very good addition for the Saints given his ample Premier League experience.
Andrew Robertson
A pretty surprising name in this list but Andrew Robertson would be a value for money signing for the Saints. Ryan Bertrand has been attracting interest having played excellently throughout this season. Puel will hate to lose him but if a big money offer comes he is certain to lose one of his key players.
Robertson can be useful in both defensive and offensive roles and can be a permanent solution to the left back woes. Despite Hull’s relegation, Robertson remained one of the most capable players who could fit in any side.
Gylfi Sigurdsson
Dusan Tadic has shown promise but hasn’t been able to shoulder the creative responsibility on his own. Gylfi Sigurdsson remains a viable target for the Saints. The Icelandic player is one of the most gifted playmakers that the Premier League has ever seen and could prove to be an upgrade to Tadic.
