Manchester United’s topsy-turvy season had a happy ending as they finished this campaign pretty successfully with three trophies as Jose Mourinho’s maiden campaign ultimately proved to be a fruitful one. United are likely to replicate their spending spree as they have already chalked out their transfer strategy which includes the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Michael Keane, Andrea Belotti and Romelu Lukaku.
Those days are gone when you bring players from the academy, groom them and unleash them on the big stage. To stay in the hunt, United had to splash their money in the transfer market and they did. The Red Devils spent vigorously in the summer as they brought Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly and the most satisfying concern is each of them has contributed to the success this season.
Despite the recent triumph, United are expected to go deep in the transfer market as they go into a complete overhaul of the side. A number of players are scheduled to arrive at the club but some of the existing players should step ahead in the upcoming season.
Paul Pogba
The £89m midfielder did show his tricks in the heart of the midfield but when you spend enormous money on a player, expectations will be there. There will be some contrasting reactions on Pogba’s performance this season but United’s midfield has struggled without him. His long strides and precise long passes have been an added bonus for the Red Devils. Usually, a player needs time to acclimatise to the English condition and the French midfielder has had his opportunities to do so now. But in the next season, he has to utilise the momentum that he has built in this season.
Marcus Rashford
The English teenager has been one of the best things that has happened to United in recent times. He made a very strong start last season where he was introduced to starting lineup by Louis Van Gaal but this season he has failed to take the opportunities. The 19-year-old had plenty of chances but failed to match up to his last season’s performance. He did have a late flurry of form but to clinch a permanent place in the starting lineup he has to improve.
Anthony Martial
The French teenager became the most expensive player when he arrived at United from Monaco and hogged the limelight as he netted 18 times in his maiden season for the Red Devils. But he failed to reach that level in this season as he couldn’t even reach half of his last season’s tally. With Champions League scheduled to feature in United’s calendar, Martial would be hoping to bring out his best in the next season.
