Paul Clement pulled off a super feat to lift Welsh outfit Swansea City out of the jaws of relegation after what was a poor season in respect to the amount of quality they have at their disposal. They made a mediocre start to the season, but picked up well, to steal some important results and the manager will know that it will be important for him to work on it, to make sure that they make a better fist of the league this time around.
They are looking to improve the depth in the squad and are also looking at a few quality players for the first team. One such player, they are now close to signing is Colombian star, Santiago Arias.
Having made a name for himself in the last World Cup in Brazil, the 25-year old right-back is a product of the La Equidad academy in his home town but he created some waves in his time with the Sporting side in Portugal. He earned himself a move to PSV back in 2013 and quickly established himself as the first choice for the Dutch side.
With two goals and six assists in all competitions, he was one of the most productive full-backs in Eredivisie and is now also attracting interests from West Ham and Everton.
At just 25, he has already won 32 caps for his national side and is one of the most reliable players in that position in Europe at the moment. An attacking full-back who loves to spend more time in the final third, Arias is an excellent dribbler of the ball. He is a decent passer and crosser but is adept at creating chances with short, quick passes in dangerous areas.
He can run in behind his man and can also sit back to shut shop when needed. He is a liability in the air but is still learning and is a perfect fit for Swansea for the next season.
Swansea City have used Kyle Naughton extensively while Angel Ragel has acted as his backup when needed. But the 34-year old Spanish full-back may not be able to put his best performances in the next season and Clement wants to induce some young blood in Arias to his side.
At just 25, he can play for a year under Naughton to learn the tricks of the English game and before long, he will be pushing the 28-year old for a place in the first team. Swansea are reportedly prepared to pay £12m for his services which might not be much in this inflated transfer market as he could be a long-term solution to help them progress in English top flight.
