Southampton are planning to reignite their interest in teen Polish defender Jan Bednarek. The Saints had a bid rejected for the 21-year-old Lech Poznan defender but are ready to revive their move by tabling an improved offer for the teenager.
As expected, the Saints parted ways with Claude Puel but the departure of the French gaffer wouldn’t affect the transfer. Martin Caceres has left the club after the season got over while there is uncertainty over Virgil Van Dijk’s future.
Van Dijk was heavily linked with Liverpool but the South Coast club lodged a complaint with the FA regarding his transfer. After apologising to the club, Liverpool have pulled out from the race but the player still is on the radar for a few clubs.
The Saints have a very useful scout system and have been very systematic in terms of finding new talents. Year after year, the South Coast club have attracted some talented defenders who went on to be a huge success in the Premier League. The likes of Toby Aderweireld and Dejan Lovren are the prime examples for Southampton’s talent pool although both the players have left the club.
Bednarek could follow the suit soon. The 21-year-old Polish defender is touted to be one of the best centre-backs in Europe and German side Hannover have also reportedly tabled a bid in the region of £2.5m. The Polish side is very reluctant to let go one of their prized assets but can bend down to Saints’ mighty financial muscle.
The club Hierarchy are looking for a relatively cheap defender who would be an instant hit at the St Mary’s. Also, the Saints are looking for a ball playing defender which has been the recent trend, who would be able to deliver those long accurate diagonal balls.
The English outfit is prepared to make the defender the costliest Polish defender ever. Southampton have had their problems as they weren’t able to hold on to their prized players. Year after year, they have lost some of their prime players and it seems this time too they are on the verge of losing one of their key players.
Bednarek helped his side finish third in the Polish league. The young defender needs to be in some of the top leagues to get the necessary exposure. The six feet two inches defender has supreme aerial ability and in a marathon league like EPL, he can blossom.
