Pedro Caixinha is on his way to make his third Mexican signing of this summer as Rangers are evaluating the options to sign Jose Javier Abella from Santos Laguna.
Rangers have been very active in the transfer market after their unexpected debacle in the recently ended season. The Gers have acted very swiftly in the summer transfer window as Caixinha has signed a bunch of potential players to strengthen his side. They failed to match the level of their archrival Celtic but Rangers surely have beaten them regarding doing business in the current transfer window.
Since Caixinha took the charge in February there has been no significant changes in this season as Celtic were way ahead of them as they dominated the Scottish Premiership pretty easily. Rangers have failed to match their level as they have not been able to defeat their archrivals for a single time this season which has affected their season hugely.
The only thing Caixinha has successfully managed to do is their return to Europe. Rangers have finished the season in the third position behind Celtic and Aberdeen and have booked a slot in the Europa League qualifying round.
Abella currently plays for Santos Laguna which happens to be Caixinha’s former club. The 23-year-old right back has been with the club since his childhood and also has the experience to represent Mexico at the Olympics. Santos’ president Alejandro Irarragorri also hinted a move for the player making the path clear for his transfer.
Rangers chairman Dave King has promised that he will inject a large amount of cash inflow to the club so that the Scottish giants can fulfil their dreams. Almost 35000 fans have renewed their season tickets so far and the Gers’ chairman has hinted that he will use that money to bring new talents to the Ibrox.
Caixinha is very well acquainted with Abella’s potential. The 23-year-old has one Liga MX title and one Copa MX title under his belt. Abella had the opportunity to don the national colours in the U-20 World Cup in 2013. He has featured in all the matches in the World Cup for Mexico.
Abella is equally comfortable in surging forward and tracking back simultaneously to help his defence. He is very consistent with his performance and overall is a very hardworking player who knows his job very well.
Caixinha has a number of right-backs at his disposal currently but the inclusion of Abella will offer more competition in the side.
