Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is reportedly keen on a move to Manchester United. The Serbian midfield enforcer has been on the wish list of Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese gaffer is very keen to reunite with his former disciple.
The 28-year-old has been one of the main performers for the Blues side as the West Londoners romped on towards the title. He, alongside N’Golo Kante, has formed a formidable midfield pairing for Chelsea but Antonio Conte is expected to bring another midfielder in a bid to rejig his side.
Matic won the title with Chelsea in 2015 with Mourinho in charge and the two shared a very warm relationship despite Mourinho’s ouster from the club in the following year. He remained in Mourinho’s good books and now he wants a move to the Old Trafford to reflect their warmth on the field.
A number of midfielders have been linked with the club with Eric Dier being at the forefront. But Mourinho thinks it would be easy to persuade the Chelsea hierarchy than Spurs chairman Daniel Levy who is known for his tough attitude when it comes to handling the transfer negotiations.
Juventus manager Max Allegri is an avid admirer of the player and has tried a number of times to entice the player to Turin. But the midfielder would prefer a move to Manchester rather than Italy. Chelsea are expected to offer improved terms to the player despite having closed in on Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.
Mourinho needs a proper holding midfielder to grind the best out of Paul Pogba. Since signing from Juventus last summer, the French midfielder had a very erratic season but he has shown flashes of brilliance which would be very encouraging for the gaffer.
In a recent match against England, Pogba literally bamboozled the Three Lions team as France went on to register a famous win over the English side. Pogba was moving smoothly as N’Golo Kante held the fort behind him. A deployment of a disciplined figure would give Pogba the license to roam around the park and Mourinho is very keen to bring Matic to the Old Trafford.
However, things are entirely not on him as it remains to be seen whether Chelsea are willing to let him go or not. Juan Mata switched his allegiance to the Manchester-based outfit in 2014 and despite having a fall out with Mourinho during his time at the Stamford Bridge the Spaniard proved to be a vital cog in the United side this season.
