Manchester United have moved one step closer in the pursuit of Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez. The Colombian playmaker hasn’t had many chances since his arrival and has been looking for a way out of the club.
Manchester United have been linked with the playmaker heavily but the club has never approached the Spanish giants formally for his services. But according to reports, United have reportedly made a firm offer of £70m for the Colombian superstar.
Jose Mourinho has been in the charge of the Red Devils since the last season and the Portuguese wants a plethora of attackers at the Old Trafford to put up a decent show next season.
United’s performance in the final third is something Mourinho wants to change and James would be ideal for the Red Devils. Despite making only 13 starts in the La Liga last season, the 25-year-old returned with figures of eight goals and six assists which impressed Mourinho.
Madrid have been very reluctant to lower their asking price but manager Zinedine Zidane has asked the club hierarchy to slash his price so United might be able to bag the player in a cut-price deal.
A typical no. 10, Rodriguez first created a lot of buzz in the 2014 World Cup with his stupendous performance in the Yellow Jersey. Without wasting time, Madrid splashed a hefty £61m to bring him to the Santiago Bernabeu but the player has been struggling to clinch a permanent place in the starting lineup.
Alvaro Morata has earlier stated that he expects James to be on the same team alongside him and with Morata on his way to Old Trafford, we might see the Spaniard partnering James up front.
When it comes to creativity, United have a number of attackers with the likes of Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata but nobody has performed to that level and adding James to the ranks would certainly add flair and dynamism to the United attack.
The Colombian is very fluent on the flanks but his actual position is right behind the main striker. His technique, passing and attacking movement could be a big boost for Mourinho who has been planning a squad overhaul for a long time.
Marco Asensio and Isco have been preferred over him by Zidane who thinks that the player doesn’t fit into his style. United are ready to hijack a deal for the player and if he does arrive, it will certainly be a big moment for the United supporters.
