After an unsatisfactory performance in the recently concluded season, Manchester City are looking to gear up to make their next season one of their best ones by bringing in players who might be able to turn the tide in their favour by winning matches for them. The first sign of their intent has been clearly shown by the signing of the mercurial Portuguese midfielder from French Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco for £43 million as the Citizens are eyeing many more in-form players to revamp their squad this summer.
Goalkeeping has been one of the areas where the Manchester club has faced a lot of problems this term, with their first choice shot stopper Claudio Bravo conceding as many as 26 goals throughout the season. This time, however, their new coach Pep Guardiola has been on the task of bringing in a good goalkeeper who has been having a good outing for his club in the respective domestic league.
Reportedly, Manchester City have closed in on the Brazilian shot-stopper of the Portuguese club Benfica, Ederson, and is looking to bring him in to end their goalkeeping woes for the next season. The Brazilian goalkeeper has been at the top of his game and has conceded only 16 goals throughout the season to star in Benfica’s Portuguese Primeira Liga win this season. He is currently rated as one of the in-demand goalkeepers for clubs from all over Europe.
However, speculations are rife that the Citizens are also holding talks over a potential move for the veteran goalkeeper from Napoli, Pepe Reina. Reports suggest that the Spaniard might be on his way to the Etihad Stadium next season, with Pep Guardiola looking to use his experience in order to sway off their goalkeeping woes in the next season.
The 34-year-old has spent a significant part of his career playing for the Merseyside club Liverpool and is considered as one of the club legends. The veteran shot-stopper has an envious track record with the Reds during his stay at the Anfield, from where he, later on, moved to join his present club Napoli in 2014.
After a stint with the German giants Bayern Munich in the next season, where he had to play the second fiddle for most of the season under the coaching of the current Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, he made a switch back to the Italian club on a permanent basis and has since been playing a very important role between the sticks for them till date.
