Leicester City have reportedly enquired about the availability of Gylfi Sigurdsson and might make a substantial offer for the Swansea City midfielder in the coming days. They will face stiff competition from Everton who are believed to have been in the queue for a brief period.
Sigurdsson’s excellence for the Welsh club hasn’t gone unnoticed as he almost single-handedly rescued them from the jaws of relegation this season. The Icelandic playmaker has expressed his satisfaction at his situation and has admitted that he is currently happy at the Liberty Stadium.
Riyad Mahrez handed a transfer request recently to the Foxes and is heading towards an exit from the King Power Stadium. The defending champions must have to chalk out a suitable replacement for the Algerian winger and has identified the Swansea attacking midfielder. Mahrez has been linked with Arsenal as the player remains a long-term interest of Arsene Wenger who will be looking for some valuable additions to the team.
Should Mahrez leave Leicester, the Foxes will be adamant for a player of that kind and Sigurdsson could be the answer. Leicester are expected to earn a hefty amount from Mahrez’s transfer if he departs and could use this money to lure Sigurdsson. Till now the Sigurdsson has shown no urgency to leave his club but a lucrative offer from Leicester might force him to change his mind.
Swansea City value the player at more than £30m and also have reportedly turned down a bid of £25m from the Toffees. A bidding war is expected to start as both Everton and Leicester will flex their financial muscles to bring the star to their respective clubs.
Leicester knows the importance of Mahrez but the Algerian playmaker has failed to live up to the mark this season. He was pretty off throughout the first half of the season but revived his form in the second half of the season to give Leicester a respectable position in the Premier League table. They know this is the best time to cash in on him as any wrong decision could hamper them from receiving a substantial fee for him. With the nominal amount they had paid for him, this deal could turn out to be the most profitable in the history of Leicester.
On the basis of the current form, Sigurdsson would be a bit of an upgrade on Mahrez and the fact that he is pretty consistent would help the team to challenge for the Top 8 in the following campaign.
