According to reports, Championship side Leeds United have decided to give a chance to former Liverpool player Madger Gomes. The young midfielder has signed a three-year deal with the Whites as he now looks to find some success at a lower level after failing in the Premier League.
The 20-year-old left the Reds three weeks back after nothing really materialised at Anfield and would apparently join Leeds’ academy squad before testing his mettle with the first team squad. Since Liverpool signed him from La Liga side Villarreal back in 2014, he failed to break into their first team and wasn’t even a regular in their Under-23s side.
His progress had seemingly got stagnated at Anfield and Leeds could give him an easy start now. To the club website, he expressed, “I’m really excited and happy to start life with Leeds United, I hope to have a good season here. Hopefully, I will get a chance to progress and make the first team as my dream is to play professionally.”
An early bloomer, the left-footed midfielder didn’t quite grow the way everyone had expected. He is tremendously versatile in the attacking third which helped him get capped at the national level previously. Although manager Thomas Christiansen isn’t seeing Gomes in his first team just yet, the move is taken with the aim of getting him into mainstream action as soon as possible.
Despite Leeds United dishearteningly finishing just out of the playoff positions the last term, the club is back on track with an active transfer stance. With a new owner at the helm, who is desperate to get the club back to the Premier League, the Whites have already got their priorities straight. They have made their impressive loanees permanent in Hadi Sacko and Pontus Jansson. Apart from that Christiansen has brought in Mateusz Klich from FC Twente.
The main reason for Gomes’ failing at Liverpool was his lengthy knee ligament injury and with Championship a more gruelling tournament, he can only hope for the best. He will join the Under-23 squad for Leeds with an eye to training with the first team during the pre-season. The new ownership is also searching for new academy coach after their Under-23s coach Jason Blunt quit the club.
Gomes was brought in by Brendan Rodgers and has already trained with the likes of Steven Gerrard. Christiansen is himself an Academy product of Barca’s famed La Masia academy and does possess an eye to realise Spanish potential. With the likes of Pablo Hernandez, Ronaldo Vieira and Eunan O’Kane in Leeds’ midfield, Gomes will definitely have an uphill task.
